What Makes Oakland Distinctive?

Below are 7 Core Values that make up the DNA of Oakland UMC

  1. Move in the Holy Spirit’s power.

Luke 24:49, “I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have clothed with power from on high."

  2. Worship with various styles and art forms.

Psalm 150:

1 Praise the LORD. Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heavens.

2 Praise him for his acts of power; praise him for his surpassing greatness.

3 Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet;  praise him with the harp and lyre,

4 praise him with tambourine and dancing; praise him with the strings and flute,

5 praise him with the clash of cymbals, praise him with resounding cymbals.

6 Let everything that has breath praise the LORD. Praise the LORD.

 3. Focus on prayer.

Acts 2:42-23, “They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles.

 4. Growth.

            Growing Deep—spiritually and small groups,

Growing Wide in evangelism and ministry,

            Growing in Christ-likeness,

Acts 2:42-47, They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread

and to prayer. 43Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles.

44All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45Selling their possessions and goods, they gave

to anyone as he had need. 46Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in

their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people.

And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.”

We believe the greatest growth for Oakland is still ahead.

 5. Outreach locally and globally.

Acts 1:8, “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

  6. Need Oriented Ministry to all ages.

James 1:27, “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.”

James 2:15-16, “Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. 16If one of you says to him, "Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed," but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it?

  7. Practice good stewardship of our church.

To whom much is given, much is required.

Matt 25:14-15, “Again, it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his property to them. 15To one he gave five talents of money, to another two talents, and to another one talent, each according to his ability. Then he went on his journey. 16The man who had received the five talents went at once and put his money to work and gained five more.
