I am
wondering what idols of American Culture are preventing or hindering
you or someone you know from becoming a more passionate and
compassionate follower of Jesus Christ.
Love to hear your thoughts.

The idol in American
culture that is preventing me from being a more passionate and
compassionate follower of Jesus Christ is being a working mom.
I would give anything for the opportunity to just be a MOM! I
feel that my children are being cheated and short changed because I
am stuck working. Our culture has us believing that we need to
give our kids and ourselves everything and the best of it so we tend
to spend more than we earn. Also society tells us that we need
to have our kids in an over abundant amount of activities which
causes us to rush from work to activity after activity and eat out
constantly. I believe that between working full time, running
kids to activities and hardly ever sitting down as a family, then
rushing the kids to bed we have lost the art of reading the Bible as
a family and talking. I long a lot of times for the days of
ole when God and family came first instead of stuff and activities!

Everyone seems to be
working more and earning less. Companies would rather pay
overtime than hire additional employees. Many employees are
also asked to pay for a percentage of their health care costs and
the age when someone can actually retire is rising. By working
longer hours, many people grow weary and tired. This
definitely could hinder them from having more time to devote to
being a compassionate follower of Christ. r |

I think hurry is keeping
us from being passionate and compassionate. We are teaching our kids
to hurry by rushing them from activity to activity. I can't remember
a time in the Bible where Jesus rushed here or hurried there. He was
always willing to be interrupted. |
